Chapter 138

chapter138

"Just this afternoon, we've already received over five hundred resumes. HR is working late, sorting through them and setting up interviews."

Greenward Power's connection to Norwood Enterprises and its amazing benefits made it a dream job for so many people. But the real draw? Every year, the best employees and execs from Greenward Power got invited to Norwood Enterprises' annual gala. That event was legendary. You could meet the mysterious CEO, Blake, rub shoulders with top executives, and even catch A-list celebrities performing on stage. For anyone at a Norwood subsidiary, this was the kind of thing you worked all year for.

However, Greenward Power hardly ever held recruitment events. And when they did, barely anyone got hired. Over time, everyone on the outside started to believe the company's standards were impossibly high and getting in was basically a miracle. This summer, as other big companies started rolling out their hiring plans, Greenward Power stayed silent. People were losing hope, until suddenly, the company dropped a jaw-dropping announcement.

Was this just hiring, or was the whole company being rebuilt? The open positions seemed like they were launching an entirely new business.

People figured something big must be going on inside the company, and for job hunters, this was the chance of a lifetime. Everyone sent in their resumes, and the HR department was totally overwhelmed. Still, nobody dared to slow down or slack off. They were all hoping that if they pulled off this recruitment drive, Lydia would be impressed enough to let them keep their jobs.

Lydia nodded. "I'll handle the interviews for the design department and the top management roles. The rest can go through the normal process."

"Yes, Ms. Norwood."

She left the office and drove straight to Lakeview Town. A faint smile played on her lips. No matter how far she'd gone or how long she'd been away, coming home and knowing she'd see her grandma always made her feel warm and excited inside.

As she drove, though, she started to feel like someone was following her. She played with her speed, changed lanes, and checked her rearview mirror The car behind her had a license plate she didn't recognize, and she couldn't get a good look at the driver. She smirked, pressed on the gas, and switched lanes again and again, overtaking cars until, after the third try, the tailing car disappeared from her mirror.

Aiden's eyes went wide in disbelief. He had the accelerator floored, but he still couldn't catch up with Lydia. He was stunned. He'd been driving professionally for over a decade, and he'd just been left in the dustby a young woman. How was he supposed to look his boss in the eye after that?

"Pathetic."

Connor's cold voice came from the back seat, just as Aiden expected.

Aiden hunched his shoulders, feeling a little embarrassed. "Boss, which route do you want to take now?"

There were a few different ways to get to Lakeview Town, but now that they'd lost Lydia, he had no clue which one she'd pick.

Connor thought for a moment, then said, "Take the route you drove before."

He had gone to Lakeview Town a few days earlier to check out a project, so he knew the area pretty well. Lydia always drove fast, and that route was the quickest. Maybe they'd catch up, but even if they didn't he already knew which house Mrs. Smith lived in. Since Lydia didn't want him tagging along, he'd just follow her quietly instead.

Once Lydia got off the highway, she got stuck in city traffic. With all the cars around,

she couldn't speed up, and that's when she realized it again. Someone was following her. This time, it was a different group of cars, not the one she'd lost earlier.
