Chapter 172

chapter172

Cameron and Kylie had been planning to talk to her, but when they saw Lucinda waiting up, their hearts melted a little.

There she was, still so thoughtful, staying up late just to make sure they got home safe and already asking about her sister. It confirmed what they'd always believed. Lucinda would never do anything to hurt Lydia.

"Lucinda, sweetheart, you don't need to worry. We just went to the police station. Your sister's still there," Kylie said, reaching out and gently taking her hand. Look at you, though. You were so anxious you forgot your slippers. The floor's cold. You'll catch a chill."

Lucinda looked up, eyes wide and innocent. "I was just so worried about you and Dad. I rushed out and forgot. It's fine, Mom, really. But what about Lydia? Why is she still at the station? Did something happen? Even with you both there, she couldn't come home?"

She furrowed her brow, looking the picture of concern, but inside she was almost giddy with happiness.

Cameron felt even more certain that Lucinda must have had her reasons for what she'd said earlier.

"It's okay, Lucinda. Lydia didn't do anything wrong. Actually, she did something incredible for the company."

Lucinda stared at him, stunned. That didn't make sense.

How could Lydia, that clueless country girl, have only just started at the company and already pulled off anything impressive?

"Oh, Lucinda, you have no idea how amazing your sister is," Kylie said, pride shining in her eyes and voice. "If it weren't for her, I'd still be in the dark about Rose and Parker lying to me all this time!"

For a moment, Lucinda's face went stiff, but she quickly put on a look of surprise. "Really? Lydia's that capable? But... why did you have to go to the police station, then? And what did Rose and Parker do?"

Kylie led Lucinda into the living room and sat with her on the sofa, letting out a deep breath. "Behind our backs they were embezzling money, faking accounts, cutting corners... the fist goes on. Lydia noticed something fishy her very first day. To keep her quiet, they actually paid people to kidnap her."

"What?" Lucinda's eyes went wide with shock. She wondered if those men had actually managed to hurt Lydia.

"So... is Lydia alright? Did she get hurt?"

Cameron let out a cold laugh. "They sent twenty-two grown men after her, and not one of them could handle her."

Lucinda clenched her teeth, hiding her frustration. Twenty-two men and they still couldn't lay a finger on Lydia? What kind of useless people did Parker hire?

"Lydia sent every single one of them to the police station. We went to get the whole story. It's a complicated mess, so she had to stay back and give her statement. She was worried we were tired, so she told us to come home and rest. She'll be back once she's done."

Inside, Lucinda was furious. Why did they fail? What a waste of a perfect chance. "Dad, Mom, Lydia's honestly incredible. I can't believe so many people couldn't beat her. I really admire her," she said, putting on her best wide-eyed look.

Cameron nodded. She really is impressive. But Lucinda, when we were at the police station, something came up that we need to ask you about."

Lucinda blinked, looking as innocent as ever. "What's that, Dad?

Cameron hesitated for a moment, then said, "Parker and Rose told us that when they came to the house this afternoon looking for us, yo told themydia was our goddaughter. Is that true?"
