chapter151
No matter what, Luke was still her grandson. There was no way she could just stand by and watch while that boy faded away in a hospital bed. As his grandmother, she simply couldn't bear it.
Lydia didn't want to make things harder for Mrs. Smith. She let a tiny smile slip onto her lips. "If Sandy agrees to donate a kidney to Luke, I can do the surgery."
Mrs. Smith felt relieved. She knew Lydia wasn't cold or heartless.
"Lyds, honestly, they just don't know how wonderful you are," Mrs. Smith muttered.
Lydia stayed a little longer to keep her company, but soon it was time to head back to the Capital. Connor was probably still waiting outside.
Lyds, it's late. Be careful driving," Mrs. Smith called after her, not quite ready to let
her go.
"I will, Grandma. I'll come by again in a few days."
It was over two hundred kilometers to the Capital, but Lydia always drove fast. Coming back to visit didn't feel that hard.
"You're always so busy. You really don't need to keep coming all the way out here just for me."
It's fine. I'll always make time for you," Lydia said, hugging her grandmother gently before heading out.
If it were up to her, she'd have brought Mrs. Smith to live in the Capital. But her grandmother liked her life here, so all Lydia could do was remind Marian, the housekeeper, to take good care of her.
Connor finally spotted Lydia coming out of the yard. He hopped out of the car and hurried over to open the door for her.
Lydia lifted an eyebrow. "Aren't you my driver?"
Connor laughed, reaching out to ruffle her hair. "Thank you."
If his night vision wasn't so bad, he'd never let his girl work herself so hard.
Lydia was only teasing, but Connor was being all considerate.
"Sorry, I didn't tell Grandma those gifts were from you," she said.
Connor's grin widened. "We're family. It doesn't matter who gave them, does it?"
Lydia fell silent. Family? Since when did he get to say that?
Once they got in the car, Connor watched as Lydia focused on the road, feeling sorry for her.
He hadn't realized Lydia's adoptive parents never really cared about her. No wonder they'd left her with her grandmother all those years.
She'd grown up without a mom or dad's love. She must have gone through so
much, dealt with things no kid should have to.
Lydia... He said her name without even thinking, wanting to say a thousand things but not knowing where to start.
"Yeah? Lydia glanced over, a little confused.
Connor smiled softly. "From now on, I'll be the one to protect you."
Her heart fluttered. His words sent gentle ripples through her chest.
This man just had a way of getting to her, right where she was most vulnerable.
Jenson drove through the night, Milana and Sandy in the backseat As soon as they reached the best hospital in town and got Sandy checked in, Mrs Smith name. popped up on the phone.
Milana saw the caller ID and rolled her eyes. "Sandy already slapped herself sixty times. What more does that old woman want? Honestly who's supposed to be her real granddaughter? She's just getting more and more muddled."
Jenson motioned for her to quiet down and answered. "Mom, is there something else?"
Milana made a face. In her opinion, the old lady didn't deserve their respect at all.
She was still fuming when Jenson suddenly shouted, "Really? You actually found Miracle Hands?"
Milana's heart skipped a beat. She immediately pressed closer to get every word of the conversation.
She heard Mrs. Smith's calm reply. Yes, but she said the kidney donor has to agree to the surgery willingly."
